The movie Gattaca reminds me of your point about free will. In a eugenics-based society, the manufactured people are the ruling class and the natural births are shunned. Their space program director was born to have no propensity for evil or murder, but ends up being the murderer anyway. And the main character surpasses his perfectly designed brother due to stronger belief and sheer willpower.
